Sofia Michelakis

Sofia is a connector, guide, and leader who brings considerable experience in philanthropy and social impact to help people bring their vision for change to life. Known for her creativity and insight, she has partnered with hundreds of generous high net wealth and ultra high net wealth individuals and families, supporting bold, values-driven decisions. Whether designing custom solutions or navigating sensitive dynamics, she brings warmth, clarity, and imagination to every engagement. 

Before joining Phīla, Sofia spent nearly a decade at the Gates Foundation, where she was the principal point of contact for the Giving Pledge community. In this role, she helped philanthropists and their families navigate the global giving landscape and advance to new levels of generosity and impact. Earlier, as Philanthropy Director at Social Venture Partners Seattle, she led education and community programs that helped individuals and couples align their values with action.

In addition to her nearly 20 years of experience advising philanthropists, Sofia brings a grounded understanding of community needs and nonprofit work. She has led community development and microenterprise programs in Seattle and South America, gaining firsthand insight into the social issues givers often seek to address. 

Sofia started her career as a corporate attorney and later taught law as a clinical professor—experiences that still shape her approach today. Working with entrepreneurs and startups taught her how to ask thoughtful questions, break down complex structures, and make tricky decisions feel more manageable. She holds a JD from the University of Michigan, cum laude, and a BA from Stanford.

Sofia lives in Seattle, and each week, in every kind of weather, you’ll find her plunging into the Puget Sound–a ritual that reminds her that she can do hard things.
